Team Arctic Rush

((This is a new character of mine.
She’s very opinionated.
Nature: Naughty.
Trait: A little quick tempered.
You can ask her questions.
Her naughty nature comes into play when dealing with someone she upset due to her opinions. She seems to (quite hypocritically) find amusement in angering those upset with her opinions. Often insulting them to push them farther.
Her snout is a bit shorter then the average Snivy.
She’s also known to wag her tail when happy and she eats a lot of roasted spicy berries. Especially Tamato berries.
All of her attacks use her tail except one. That attack comes out of her mouth in the shape of a flame.  It is however a normal Solar Beam.
All these things hint to what her father was.
She also doesn’t like relationships with two pokemon where one has a weakness to the other.
This means she’s probably going to have a hard time with Amory the Frillish and Tock the Ghastly.
If you want to know her name or anything else about her ask her. She’s also open for debating others’ opinions.))

Team Azure FTW!: On overused species in PMD

pmdteamnoire:

sparradile:

teamazure:

From “Rules of the IRC”:

“It’s mandatory that your team have a Eevee, Zorua, Deino, Sneasel and/or Riolu.”

I know they’re just poking fun, and maybe it’s because I’ve been considering an Eevee myself, but I’m not sure if this is such a bad thing? Yes there are lots of Eevee/Zorua/Riolu etc. but…

People complaining about “overused” Pokemon is something that’s always bothered me. The only reason they get used so much is because people like them, so why not? I think it’s fun to see all the different ways that people draw, write, and use the same Pokemon.

The whole “you need to be original so pick unpopular Pokemon” idea is such a dumb one, and it hits both sides. My teams are made up of Pokemon that I happen to really like (I’m just a sucker for crabs and pretty-much any Grass type, carnivorous plants especially, haha), but I often get comments along the lines of, “Wow, I love your team! So nice to finally see some unpopular Pokemon!” And that’s not a compliment. How much these Pokemon turns up on teams had nothing to do with my picking them, and yet I get the feeling that lots of people think I chose them just because no one else used them. But I want them instead to feel my undying love for these guys. ;__;

There are a lot of great teams out there that use popular Pokemon, and a lot of bad ones that use unpopular Pokemon. I have no problem with seeing any number of any Pokemon, I just want to see them written well and it seems like that should be all that matters.

I agree 100%. I think the main problem is that the overused species are horrendously written. People don’t utilize the species’ unique attributes and end up creating ~*kawaii woof pokeman chars*~ (see Jellyweasel’s Team Furfags - http://jellyweasel.deviantart.com/gallery/31828402#/d4ukk7m) and agsagjsafh. There are some great Zorua and great Eevee characters out there (although I haven’t seen too many Riolus I even kind of like because I fucking hate Riolus with a burning passion) because people use the unique attributes of the species.

I used a Deino for Cecile because it best represented what I wanted to have happen with her, seeing as though she was intended to be a way for me to create catharsis with my own struggles with mental illness. It’s worked fabulously well. However, I more often than not see people who don’t take into account that Deinos are supposed to be nasty, violent things and the two heads of Zweilous are supposed to hate each other - the creature is essentially in a constant state of torment on either side.

It all comes down to how the character is written and what you want to do with xir.

(( If I may have my two cents. I agree with what you wrote completely.

I have many teams and many in the works and in no way am I stating I’m an amazing writer or character developer but in the same way you see way too many Deino/Zweilous that don’t address the Deino/Zweilous traits I see a lot of Banette that just aren’t ever addressed for what they are either.

Banette are strong and they have the ability to use their body in a voodoo doll way but this is also balanced out by they must hold a crippling grudge and be at least a little unstable. I think people tend to forget this. They are all the negative emotions the Shuppet collected as well as the doll’s. There are no exceptions to this. It is literally what a banette is. They also hate being betrayed. They are hatred and grudges given life.

And this would lead to amazing characters and character development but very few take advantage of it. It drives me crazy as it’s not even possible and they all end up being either pretty creepy looking pranksters or angsty for the sake of angst. No. (And I want to be clear I’m not saying all are. Just some I’ve seen.)

I’d like to make a point. I’ll use my teams as an example.

Good and bad traits are important but also it’s good to take advantage of the Pokemon’s traits too. These are not just personality traits often they make the Pokemon what they are. Think of some of them as instincts.

Gregory:

He is an extreme power house. I’ll admit this openly. He is an extremely powerful attacker. He uses his opponent’s mental weaknesses to his advantage and uses his psychic abilities to cause horrific mental images in his opponent’s mind (as well as Banette’s own voodoo doll abilities) and is prone to causing pain to those his opponent cares about most. (once again using the voodoo doll ability as well as mixing Destiny Bond with it.)

But the reason he’s this way is balanced out by the negatives.

Shuppet’s gain power through absorbing negative emotions and he was a really nice guy as a shuppet. He and Shade would specifically deal with the dead and he used his ability to absorb the negative emotions of the ghosts so that they could rest. All the while it was putting more and more of a strain on him.

Once he became a banette the issues became in the forefront. He’s cruel and somewhat sadistic. Completely intolerant of people he deems he can’t stand. But even more then that is that he’s deeply unstable.

The main themes I wanted with Gregory is he’s not stable. And I in no way intend to play that off in a cool way. It’s not a split personality he doesn’t just switch between two. It sneaks up on him sometimes. He deals greatly in hatred, a slightly sadistic nature, and obsession.

He can not stand for someone to touch or harm Shade and is extremely over protective of her.

He hates himself more then anyone could ever hate him.

Examples of this:

He once attacked Aura before she evolved to get back at Tock who attacked Shade during the Fireworks event. He did not care that Aura was an innocent nor did he care if he permanently scarred her emotionally or if she died. He did not care about anything but getting back at Tock (which is why Tock has shown hatred for him several times. He finds him to be a complete and total dick.) for what he had done. He even used his psychic abilities to get into her mind as well as his Destiny Bond and Banette special ability to make it so Tock’s attacks hit her instead. That was all that mattered.

For me his power is equal to how unstable he is and how much he can’t stand it.

This is already getting long. I’ll just say a few more.

Tock:

His ability to transform is superb. He is never without hands and he physically becomes what he transforms into. (An ability some Ghastly are shown to have.) The trade for this is he’s extremely weak. His psychic abilities are really bad. He’s only good with physical attacks. And even those aren’t great. He can’t carry much of anything. He’s also a bit smaller then the normal Ghastly. Using Jacques as an example his black circle/body part would be a whole foot smaller all around. This is partly due to making his hands out of the dark gas. But also he’s just a bit smaller. Part of the reason he’s so good with his hands and transforming is due to once being a Zoroark. He’s gone from illusions to actual transforming though. He’s unable to use attacks when transformed though.

I made Team Ome’Ultear (which is literally named for Team “Over Used”) to make the point that just because a pokemon is over used doesn’t mean it can’t be a good character just like underused ones can be bad.

Tierie:

Tierie is a very polite and docile Deino. However she can’t see and her hearing isn’t amazing. She identifies things by biting them. Quite hard. Not for any aggressive nature but because it’s the only way she can really identify things. She also feels her way around. She’s often covered in bruises due to this.

She’s also not the brightest and a bit impulsive and instinct driven. But she seems wiser then she comes off but not the smartest.

Toma:

Toma has bad eye sight in one of his eyes (hence the glasses) due to getting a fever in his youth which caused his illusions to fall out of wack. He already had poorer health being the weaker of a pair of male twins. Being a newborn didn’t help. It permanently reduced his eye sight. That eye is always a bit off when he uses his illusions.

He’s quite weak but quite smart but at times a bit naive. But he’s friendly much like his teammate. If not a bit shyer and meeker.

I see where Locust-spawning is coming from here on the whole Deino thing. I see way too many Deino that get around their crutch way too easily. Or are too passive. Or Zweilous that are passive.

I’ll admit I get a bit worried when it comes to Tierie but I can also not imagine her evolving without some major changes.

One thing I also see people forget is Zorua does not transform. It uses illusions. There is a huge difference here in that while it can create illusions of using other pokemon’s moves it actually can’t.

Zorua and Zoroark can make themselves look like a flying type but they can’t fly. Also their form didn’t really change.

My opinion is over used Pokemon or under used doesn’t matter just remember to stay loyal to the nature’s of the Pokemon. These actually can lend themselves to great character moments.

The point of all the long text is just remember to pick based on the personality and traits you find interesting in a Pokemon. Pick that over aesthetics and how over used or under used a pokemon is.

I am going to have two Zorua now. I really enjoy their abilities and I like their personalities/behavior patterns. I choose them for that reason.

I hope this didn’t come off rude.

Also I don’t really like Riolu either.))

I really…really like shroomish…I have one on my Sapphire that’s named Pufnstuf…so here’s Vince.
And Tock because I really don’t ever draw him but I love him to death. And a little Cecile to go with him~

((Freaking Tock. All over the place.
This makes me so happy.
I really like how you draw his hands. I really like how you make him look in general.
It’s given me an idea on how to make his will-o-wisp look now.
I wish I could favorite this.
Thank you.))

((Well this exists.
I was practicing male anatomy. Rather practicing male anatomy in my style and I drew Gregory.
And then suddenly Tock.
So have Tock shirtless. I’m going to go curl up in a ball and cry.
It’s worth noting I draw especially feminine on purpose and that Tock (And Gregory) look especially feminine.
Tock is a very unfortunate man because while Gregory’s voice makes up for it Tock’s does not. Poor Tock. You used to have a manly voice until becoming a Ghastly too.
My personal preference (on an artistic level) is that males don’t look that different from females. It to me gives a subconscious level of equality. Some of my characters do care if they’re perceived manly others do not.
Like Gregory gives no fucks.
Tock only cares if a certain Deino/one half of a Zweilous is around.
But I don’t mean that on a sexist level. I mean if everyone looks similar it puts me in a position that their personalities have to be what stands out. And that’s what I’m going for. I’ve always been for subtle differences between all my characters (male and female, race, etc.) so that only tiny things set them apart but their personalities is what really defines them.
That being said I can completely understand if you don’t like that.))

((Dude this is so rad. I love ittttt. <3))

So I’ve been waiting since September to make a new member. I’ve had the idea in mind since then (a Kabuki-dancer inspired character) and FINALLY have decided to show you guys something. Initially, I had wanted a bird pokemon, but I can’t really draw the bird to be the way I wanted it to be - it just felt too stiff, like I was forcing it. Lately I’ve spent some time doodling Kecs in my notebooks, and realized, “WOW this would be perfect!!” so I decided to materialize my ideas with some concept art. I’ve been unsure about my color scheme thus far - I like traditional Kabuki colors (red, black, white) but I feel it’s too strong and would clash with my other team members who are cool-colored. It’s part of the reason why I made that poll today haha…I’ve yet to decide on make up, and scratched a few designs in just as placeholders. Kabuki makeup should describe the character that’s being “played”, so to speak. I’ll also include some of my references so you can understand better! Of course, as of yet, nothing is set in stone. Oh, and before I forget, the reason I changed the kec’s crest colors was because I’ve seen it change from yellow to green in the actual PMD games. But there’s a pretty strong chance it will remain classic gold-yellow.
Edit: Actually now I really find myself liking the straight gold crest as opposed to red/white. WILL DRAW MORE SOON!!
